Young India

Independence day

60 years passed and so will 61. Do we need a day to celebrate our independence?

I posed this question to a young girl whom I was interviewing for a job. No, came the answer. No Indian needs a reminder. Good people will be patriotic and will do something about it always.

When did your mother do something for the country?
Not sure! said, Namitha
Oh, she may not be patriotic!
what rubbish!
Ha, I proved my point. We need these reminders.

Namitha was 22. Normal youngster into cricket, Movies and reading harry potter. But what was glaring was her being an "Indian".

This was in contrast to my generation, where a friend of mine proclaimed that she wanted to "escape" from this country. She eventually did. Many like her followed.

One of them recently called back as he wanted to find a good school for his daughters as they where "growing" up.

"So, do you have a pet peev"
"Yes, Narayan Murthy. For starters he complains too much and secondly he sat with a smile on his face when Bill gates was criticizing India in that interview on Television"

I smiled. This generation will not let the flag down.
